World Teachers’ Day

On Monday, 5th October, the world celebrated World Teachers’ Day for the twenty-sixth time. It has been celebrated annually since 5th October 1994 and was originally modeled to commemorate the founding of the ILO/UNESCO recommendation concerning the status of teachers in 1966. Now, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrations and most ceremonies will take place online.

This year World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated to the theme “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future”. The day provides the occasion to commemorate the profession of teaching, appreciate accomplishments, and bring notice to the voices of educationalists. This is especially vital, as they are at the very core of all efforts to reach global education, with no person left behind.

The coronavirus has greatly increased the burden placed upon various education systems, and it is more important that ever that we work together with teachers on the difficult task of teaching and learning. Recently, teachers have made immense efforts to provide remote learning, support students in difficult learning conditions, re-open schools, and ensure that learning gaps have been diminished,.

Now, more than ever, it’s important to appreciate the effort, time and energy teachers around the world have put into keeping our various school systems afloat. I would like to send out a heartfelt thankyou to all my teachers, for their wisdom, their patience and their unwavering drive to pass on knowledge. Happy World Teachers’ Day!
