MID 90s, a movie review

“A lot of times we feel like our lives are the worst, but I think if you looked in anybody else`s closet, you wouldn´t trade your stuff for their stuff.” (Quote from the film)

Mid 90s (2018) tells the story of Stevie, a thirteen-year-old boy growing up in 90s LA, who is navigating his summer between his troubled home and a group of newly found friends he meets in a skater shop. But the movie isn´t just that. It doesn´t only depict the platonic love of friendship but also covers a number of serious topics such as racism, domestic abuse, jealousy, alcohol/drug abuse or poverty. The story also focuses on our personal development journey.

During the movie this skater group becomes a form of an alternative family for Stevie. He is influenced by their non-chalant behavior, talks like they do and thus ends up in various dangerous situations. The viewer also gets a great insight into the problems of Stevie´s friends; they are all struggling with their individual problems such as conflicts at home and an uncertain future. But there is one thing that connects them, no matter how hard life gets, no matter what was and what will be and that is SKATING. At the end of the day, this is the thing that their friendship is built on, and even in hard times they return to that.
