USA – Canada: Thanksgiving traditions

On this day, the focus is on gratitude and being together with family and friends. The Thanksgiving dinner also has a lot to do with tradition: the main dish is, of course, the roast turkey. It is served with a variety of side dishes such as sweet potatoes, green vegetables, corn, and cranberry or cranberry sauce. For dessert, most families eat pumpkin pie – a delicious, moist and sweet pie, often served with whipped cream.

A few days before Thanksgiving, this holiday is offically proclaimed by the American president. In an address to the nation, he also talks about current issues and looks back on the events of the year. Another Thanksgiving tradition is the spectacular ‘‘Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade“ in New York City. The parade, which is broadcast live on TV, is famous for the “floats“- giant floating figures that they parade through the streets of the city.

The so-called “National Thanksgiving Turkey Pardoning“, during which two turkeys are pardoned by the American president every year, is also an important part of the festival, too.
